Writing Characters

So, today, I thought I'd type out all the information on the characters I'm currently writing about. I want to show you how I write them and how I block it out. 

So, let's use a few examples, like Supernatural, Harry Potter, Once Upon a Time, and Torchwood. We'll start with the simple ones, Torchwood and Supernatural. Now, I have two different ways you can block out your character. So, for example Evie and Lily, it would look something like this:

Because I've written Evie and Lily for 6 FanFictions, not everything is there. There used to be a lot more than that but right now, I'm thinking about ending it so, some of the info isn't on there because I know Bekah reads my blog and I don't want to ruin my ideas. 

You see, I like to write and I like to write multiple FanFictions of one thing. So, I also have this way of blocking out my characters:


Name: Laurel Donovan
Age: (You see I left this blank? If you don't know something, just leave it blank and come back to it, or put a question mark and come back.)
Species: Nephilim
Love Interest: Castiel
Extra: Works for Naomi, Hates Castiel

Now, Torchwood is easier, you can use this for anything really. If you're writing a novel, you can use this, this isn't difficult. 


Name: Remi Harkness
Real Name: Selene Ford (Okay, maybe you don't need this one but you never know.)
Age: 23
Job: Torchwood Agent
Past: ex-Time Agent, ex-companion, ex-Torchwood
Family: Jack Harkness
Extra: Never knew her mother, Immortal until Miracle Day 

The reason I put EXTRA on there is because, there might be something that doesn't need a category or I can't think of a category like the Immortal or Mortal part, it will just go into EXTRA. 

Now, let's get a little more difficult, a little more detail. Let's start with Harry Potter then Once Upon a Time. Harry Potter, there's a lot of details you need to make a good HP fic...good. This is how I block the characters out - let's check out my character Alexandria:


Name: Alexandria King (Lestrange)
Wand: 14 1/2 in (length), Alder (wood), Unicorn Hair (core), Slightly Springy (flexibility) (This is my actual wand on Pottermore, so if you have a Pottermore account, use that wand.)
Pet: Slytherin
House: Imagine, the Barn Owl
Love Interest: Neville Longbottom
Family: Bellatrix and Rodolphus Lestrange, the Malfoys, the Blacks, Megara King
Blood Status: Pureblood *I forgot to add this the first time. Just realized last night. This is important!*
Nickname: Lexa
Patronus: Bat
Extra: Perfect, Dumbledore's Army, part of the Order, Metamorphmagus, Head Girl, part of the Slug Club

I think the most difficult one for me is that I'm starting a Once Upon a Time fic and planning out my characters, making sure every detail is right and knowing what to keep in and keep out. Let's look at both of the characters I'm in the process of writing about. You'll see question marks in some parts because it's not perfect and I'm not sure about the other things yet.

You really don't want to go half-assed and start a story and find out that you didn't have all the information you need. The Torchwood one would work for Doctor Who too. Probably Supernatural or any other story because a backstory is a good thing to have. I've learned that over the years on FanFiction. Right now, I'm trying to make sure my characters aren't Mary-Sues. Don't even get me started on that!
